This course investigates translation and multilingualism as they relate to the experience of the city. Straddling multiple approaches -- including eco- and socio-linguistics, semiotics, visual arts, comparative literature and translation studies -- this course will explore broad questions about language and place-making practices as they emerge across the contemporary urban landscape. In particular, we will try to address how linguistic/cultural diversity is promoted, negotiated, segregated or suppressed in the city, with the aim of encouraging trans-disciplinary conversations and research projects.
