This course explores how war has shaped, and been shaped, by society in the early modern period, examining topics such as the just war tradition and chivalry in medieval Europe, the early modern military revolutions, the laws of war and the treatment of non-combatants and the impact of armed conflict on early modern state-building. Lectures will also address warfare in the New World and efforts to bring about peace throughout the nearly four centuries under consideration.
