Course description
This course provides an overall view of the development of Catalan culture and civilization, enabling students to acquire an insight into Catalonia and to understand why Catalonia is a nation. Classes will include lectures, discussions and audio-visual material.
This course also introduces students to the language of Catalonia.
Course outline
The relationship between culture and politics in the development of Catalonia, with its capital Barcelona, is not accidental but fundamental. Therefore, this course examines this relationship by teaching students Catalonia’s political history related to its social and cultural history. Attention will be given to particularly important historical periods and to present day Catalonia in its process towards independence from Spain (history in the making).
